Meet Jessica Velasquez

A Message from Jessica

I am excited to announce that I am running for Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. New Mexico is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and electing Democrats up and down the ballot will protect the health of our communities and deliver a recovery that works for all New Mexicans. Over the next two years we’ll fight to re-elect Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham,  keep other statewide offices in Democratic hands, and make sure redistricting leads to fairer representation for hard-working families. We’ll elect a strong voice for the people to replace Deb Haaland, and send a strong message to Yvette Herrell that her vote to throw out millions of votes and overturn a lawful election is a slap in the face to the families of southern New Mexico who believe in playing by the rules. If Democrats work together towards our common goals, we will continue the electoral success we saw under Chair Elliston’s leadership and build an even more effective Democratic Party of New Mexico.

I am committed  to Democratic involvement in rural areas, increasing voter registration and turnout among young and first-time voters in historically underrepresented communities, actively fielding candidates in every race at every level across New Mexico, enhancing Democratic Party infrastructure in collaboration with all 33 County Parties, strengthening caucuses, and recruiting, training and retaining homegrown New Mexico political talent.

I have spent the last several years organizing in her East Mountains community and beyond. Over the last two election cycles, I twice came within a few hundred votes of flipping one of the state’s most historically red House districts. I increased turnout and engagement in a crucial area of the state where Democratic performance had lagged behind for many election cycles. I know that community building starts at the grassroots level and will ensure that the Democratic Party of New Mexico is dedicated to true grassroots organizing well ahead of the next election cycle.  I understand the needs and concerns of New Mexico Democrats from diverse backgrounds and all walks of life and will be a Party Chair who will deliver for all Democrats across the state.

And I'm asking for your support in this effort.  If you are a member of the State Central Committee, I would be honored to earn your vote for State Chair. If you are not a member of the SCC, please consider attending your local Ward elections and running to become a member of the SCC.  Check your County Party website for more information.  I'm asking for your vote for Chair and I look forward to working with you!

Thank you,

Jessica

Jessica's Background

In 1999, Jessica Velasquez moved to New Mexico after completing her BA in English at the Pennsylvania State University. She earned her teaching credentials and MA in Language, Literacy and Sociocultural Studies at the University of New Mexico, and taught in the Albuquerque Public Schools before becoming adjunct faculty at UNM.  Jessica married her husband Aaron in 2006. Together, they own and operate Theta Plate Inc., an Albuquerque-based electroplating company that has been in the family since 1976.  Jessica feels lucky to live in Sandia Park with her husband, three kids, two dogs, and a dozen chickens.

Jessica has always been active in community service, and serves on the boards of Sandia Park Scenic Byway Firewise, dedicated to reducing wildfire risk and increasing community resilience, and of Kindness Club International, which aims to build positive school culture through student leadership.  Jessica is a member of the Democratic Party of NM's State Central Committee and is former Chair of Ward 22A in Bernalillo County. Jessica served on Governor Lujan Grisham's interim Education Committee and also served on the Bernalillo County 2020 Census Complete Count Committee.

Jessica left public education to engage more fully in local politics, and over the last two election cycles, Jessica came within 140 and under 500 votes respectively of flipping one of the state’s most historically conservative, "red" House districts. Jessica’s efforts helped increase voter turnout to record levels in a crucial area of the state where Democratic performance had lagged behind.

Now, as a candidate for DPNM Chair, Jessica brings her experience from the campaign trail to reinvigorate and re-energize our state party. With an eye to engaging rural communities, registering voters and driving voter turnout among young and first-time voters in historically underrepresented communities, and strengthening Party infrastructure, Jessica is dedicated to building an even more inclusive, effective and dynamic DPNM so that we can continue to win elections and fight for our core Democratic values and policies.
